'Smishing' attacks are used to imitate legitimate companies, via text message. Victims are asked to provide personal information such as passwords, PIN numbers, account numbers, social security numbers, debit card and credit card numbers or other personal information in a reply text message or ask the victim to call a given number to provide this information. Some text messages urge victims to download an item on their phone. This download is often a virus. Many people become victims of identity theft as a result of smishing attacks. Please be aware that Citizens Bank and Trust Company will NEVER ask you to disclose any personal information in the form of an unsolicited text message. Please contact us for more information or if you believe you are a victim of smishing.

Report suspicious activity to the FTC. If you believe you've been scammed, file your complaint at www.ftc.gov, then visit the FTC's identity theft web site at www.ftc.gov/idtheft to learn how to minimize your risk of damage from identity theft.
